This paper contributes to the epistemological debate in Special and Inclusive Education, promoting a vision of self-determination as a cross-cutting and foundational dimension of every person’s Quality of Life, with a particular focus on students with disabilities. Within this pedagogical framework, the Self-Determination Inventory System (SDIS) serves as a tool capable of articulating an ecological and systemic perspective on school inclusion while simultaneously fostering a reflective and inclusive approach in teaching practice. Building on these premises, the paper – after examining the intrinsic link between self-determination and Quality of Life – presents the results of an exploratory study, through the analysis of two case studies, focused on assessing self-determination in the school setting, implemented using the innovative data triangulation protocol (student, parent, teacher) provided by the SDIS.
