Abstract

The growing trend of inclusive physical education relies on different traditions amongst the European countries. In Italy it has been following the legislation on educational inclusion since the 1970s. Students with special educational needs, regardless of their health condition, must participate in physical activities together with all other students. The aim of this study is to carry out a pilot study showing if the regulation on physical education is actually matching with the practice of physical education at school in Italy. During the school year 2019-2020, 50 physical education teachers coming from high schools in Rome have been required to fill in the Lieberman-Brian Inclusion Rating Scale for Physical Education (LIRSPE). The purpose of this rating scale is to evaluate the effort made by teachers to include people with disabilities in a general physical education environment.
