In a global context of interconnected geopolitical crises, wars, health emergencies, poverty and the consequences of climate changes, children are constantly deprived of the exercise of their rights. Entities of the international community such as UNICEF work for their protection, contributing to their survival and development. The article introduces the role of UNICEF by adopting a historical perspective from its establishment to recent developments. Besides, the principle of the best interests of the child regulated by the Convention on the Rights of the Child will be examined. Specifically, it will be analyzed how the right to education is nuclear in the implementation of the best interests of the child. Subsequently, the programmatic nature of UNICEF in its commitment to the right to education in the world and in Italy will be explored. Finally, it will be highlighted how the right to education is a tool to ensure a goal of gender equality, reporting on UNICEF's action to ensure access to quality education for girls and young women around the world.
