Abstract

Abstract Assessment and evaluation are two of the weakest areas of the Italian school system, both with reference to the national regulations governing them and to the assessment practices of teachers. In both initial teacher preparation and in their in-service training, a marginal importance is given to assessment and evaluation. This is a consequence of the educational policies as well as of the weakness of the educational research in the field of assessment and evaluation. The construction and the development of teachers’ competences in the field of assessment and evaluation needs to be linked to the development of the empirical research in the field and to the reflection on the assessment and evaluation practices actually implemented at a school level. The critical analysis of the national assessments carried out by INVALSI could be an effective starting point for enhancing teachers’ awareness of the complexity of the assessment and evaluation tasks and for the development of their competences in this field.
