Abstract

With the First World War collective and private mourning took on unprecedented proportions. In order to remember the dead and attempt to make sense of the tragedy, the need for national and private mourning became a pressing concern and a political urgency. What I propose is a timeline of the features of the war memorial within the period 1918-1938 in Italy. Considering this background, I will examine the ways in which the image of the war dead was taken up by the fascist school system to inculcate obedience and sacrifice.
