Abstract

The purpose of this reflection focuses on a question about the trajectory of the History of Education in Portugal, taking into account two dimensions: as academic discipline and as autonomous field of knowledge. We also consider the specificity of the discipline as closely linked to teacher training in the Portuguese case configured wants input in the Universities or the constitution of a field of knowledge which was away from other branches of history, such as the History of Mentality or the History of Ideas. They are probably characteristics which historically shaped the history of education and that initially resulted in its inclusion in the higher education level and a second time while the boosted field of research and theoretical reflection. This development is accompanied by the organization of historians of education associative schemes both nationally and internationally amplitude. The vision we promote the dynamics of the History of Education falls since the 70s of the Twentieth Century to the first decade of the present Century, emphasizing the rhythms and dissonances of a process that goes through the recognition of university discipline and progressive theoretical and empirical robustness, but necessarily reflect the reconfiguration of the University itself and the dynamics of the community of historians of education.
