Lanfranc of Milan’s Chirurgia magna enjoyed considerable dissemination across the German-speaking regions during the late Middle Ages and the early Modern period, much like its shorter counterpart, the Chirurgia parva. Unlike the latter, however, the German tradition of the Chirurgia magna has, thus far been neither the subject of a critical edition nor of systematic scholarly investigation. This study presents the ongoing work toward the critical edition of the two distinct Early New High German versions of the text, conducted within the framework of the PRIN 2022 project The Germanic Reception of Lanfranc of Milan’s Chirurgia magna: Critical Edition and Terminological Commentary of the English and German Branches of the Tradition. Particular attention is devoted to the specific features of their manuscript transmission and to the textual-critical challenges they present.
