The Old English poem Deor is preserved in ms Exeter, Cathedral Library 3501. Different editions of Deor have been published so far, the most authoritative being Malone’s edition (1977), and some passages of the text have been reanalysed, in a constant attempt to shed some new light on its loci critici. However, the results of the investigations on the form and content of Deor which appeared after the publication of Malone’s edition are available in papers and studies on specific aspects and cruces of the text, not in new editions, which makes them unavailable as a whole to the modern reader. Moreover, research and notes on the text in recent studies still rely on Malone’s edition, although they question some of Malone’s choices. This paper introduces a new and comprehensive critical edition of Deor which aims to show the text as it results from the most recent studies on its form and content, and which will be endowed with an innovative critical apparatus.
