Abstract

This essay examines three short stories from the collection Nichts als Gespenster by the Berliner writer Judith Hermann. In particular, this paper focuses on the concept of those interpersonal relationships originated from a liquid, postmodern society. By analysing the work of some contemporary sociologists, this essay comes to the conclusion that individuals are no longer the main actors of social events and processes. In modern society, the real main characters are systems and environments, and the individual is forced to live without a certain or determined role, in permanent loneliness.
