Abstract

Euripides' Alcestis was performed in the place of a satyr play. The mixture of tragic and comic elements is another unusual, but not unique, feature of this drama. The drunk scene may also be a feature of the satyr play, but it is not performed: the servant comes from inside the stage-building and describes for the public an interior scene. One does not find any issue that does not lend itself to multiple interpretations. Actually a closer insight allows to disprove many of these interpretations, underlining the tragic destiny of Admeto and Alcestis.
