Abstract

Summary - Faunal remains from the cistern found in the Sanctuary of Hercules at Alba Fucens (Massa d’Albe, L’Aquila).

Several excavation campaigns have been carried out between 2006 and 2011 in the court of the Sanctuary of Hercules at Alba Fuces. In particular, in 2011 a large circular cistern was identified. Such cistern, located close to the sacellum where the colossal statue of Hercules Epitrapezios was found, was built using the polygonal masonry technique with later reconstructions of the upper edge. The cistern was filled with the voluntary accumulation of architectural elements, mixed to a large quantity of pottery, glass and marble fragment as well as faunal elements. The filling of the cistern was done in a late period, the first decades of the 6th century A.D.; the materials recovered mainly come from the destruction of the Sanctuary of Hercules that occurred between the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 6th century A.D. after a seismic event of large proportions whose effects could be observed also in Rome. The large osteological sample includes often complete anatomical elements of domestic (mainly cattle) and wild animals and provides fundamental information on the exploitation of animal resources and on the settlement dynamics. Furthermore, the excellent preservation of the remains allow to define biometric characters of the species as well as the butchering processes and the craft use of hard animal tissues by the Late Antique community of Alba Fucens.
