Abstract

After a brief introduction on the reception of Arthur Schnitzler’s work in Italy, which mainly focuses on the 1970s (the decade when Schnitzler became one of the pivotal authors of the Mid-European literary canon in Italy), this essay analyses four cinematic adaptations of Arthur Schnitzler’s novellas which were released when the Austrian writer’s success in Italy was at its best: Il ritorno di Casanova (1980) by Pasquale Festa Campanile, La signorina Else (1980) by Enzo Muzii, Ad un passo dall’aurora (1989) by Mark B. Light (Mario Bianchi), Mio caro dottor Gräsler (1989) by Roberto Faenza.
