The contribution aims to examine the stories that, in Roman historiographical tradition, explain the origin of the epithet ‘Moneta’, both as an attribute of Juno and as an independent divine name. Particular attention is paid to the tradition of commentaries on Lucan’s Bellum civile and to the scholia on Juvenal's satires, which have not yet been given the recognition they deserve. Some general considerations about the mechanisms of name-giving in Roman polytheism conclude the article.
