Abstract

Summary - The faunal remains from Grotta Bebbetto Appodia in “Le Camere” locality (3rd century BC  - Subiaco, Latium)

Abundant faunal remains from a karst cavity called Grotta Bebbetto Appodia, located in the locality of “Le Camere” near Subiaco (Latium) were recovered between the autumn 2009 and the summer 2011. These findings were associated with fragmented pottery and human remains of at least 4 individuals between 20 and 40 years of age (2 males, one female and one of no identified gender). The analysis of the dog, pig, cattle, sheep and goats remains provides information on the subsistence economy in the mid-third century BC in the upper valley of Aniene river, and permit to develop some hypotheses on a ritual complex that presumably contemplated the sacrifice of domestic animals, the subsequent consumption of meat and the deposition in the natural cavity of the remains from the meal and of some portions not consumed.
