Abstract

The declamation I 6 of the Elder Seneca deals with such a common topic as pirates capturing young men who uselessly ask their fathers for ransom. In this case, the intervention of the daughter of the pirate chief leads to the release of the captive, who marries the girl but is disinherited by his father when he refuses to divorce her and marry a rich orphan. The paper analyses this theme, its relationship with other controversies about pirates and with myths and legends (Jason's, Theseus' and so on) in which a man is helped escaping a severe danger by a woman who has fallen in love with him.
