Quelques réflexions sur la production à figures rouges en Italie du sud: le cas du “Lucanien”

Alexandra Attia, Mathieu Scapin

Based on our respective field’s researches, this paper aims to present some preliminary observations on the production called “lucanian” since A.D. Tendall has organised a significative number of potteries into five regional styles.

The lucanian production was the first identify and dated from the middle of the fifth century B.C. to the end of the fourth century B.C. due to regional and stylistic studies. But nowaydays, this designation seems to be outdated since the excavation at Metaponto brought to light kilns and workshops and the stylistic studies by scholars have reassign many of the material indexed by Trendall.

The paper will attempt to understand how the idea of the lucanian red-figured vases was developed from its birth until now and presents the actual works in progress.
