Abstract
The Devolution of Ferrara occurred on January 29th 1598 with the official entry of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini in Ferrara, determined the official and definitive passage of the city to the State of the Church and at the same time, confirmed the passage from a form of government, the ducal one, to another one, the Papal government. This almost painless handover for the city allowed episodes of continuity between administrative measures, administration of justice and maintenance of benefits as far as the community was concerned but there were also cases of discontinuity, such as, for example, a greater representation concerning the population (Constitutional centumvirale) and a significant interest on the part of the central Roman government for the hydraulic policy regarding Ferrara. But it is also necessary to consider the works of art of the ferrarese Renaissance arrived in the Roman collections and how the events have been handed down by local intellectual.
