Abstract

The positive role of archaeologists represents one of the many aspects of the relationship between archaeology and politics. By analyzing the legal processes and broader cultural debates that led to heritage law commissions, urban planning, and superintendence reforms, it is possible to outline a complex discussion among different branches of archaeology. Critical archaeological figures, such as Bianchi Bandinelli and Massimo Pallottino, came to represent and support the new political identities of early republican Italy. Within a determined time frame (1945-1970), this paper follows the concrete developments of archaeological interventionist tendencies, motivated by a common desire to establish a legal apparatus to protect cultural heritage and archaeological work, but supported by different and opposing political visions.
