Abstract

The paper is an analysis of a famous episode, the duel between Orlando and the giant Ferraù, in the Spagna Magliabechiana, from which I’m preparing the critical edition.
The text of the Spagna Magliabechiana, conserved in the manuscript II, I 57 of the Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze, narrates the life and the feats of the young knight Orlando, Charlemagne’s nephew, from his birth till his death. This manuscript is one of the Italian versions of the Charlemagne’s Spain conquest and it is an evidence of the transfer of the Carolingian material from France to Italy.
I propose a detailed study of the sources and the narrative wheels of the episode to create a hierarchy between all the sources used by the author and to establish the way those have been treated during the redaction.
